Sweeney Todd (1982) - Opening Scene

If you guys can't have a civilized conversation about Sweeney Todd, don't comment on this video.
I thought I'd upload the opening sequence of the play for all you sweeney fans. This is the 1982 Production of Sweeney Todd staring George Hearn and Angela Lansbury(NOTE: Angela Lansbury is not in this scene)
I thought the musical lost a lot of it's hillarity in the Burton film, but I guess that was Burton's choice. A dark film shouldn't have too much humor in it, but it's good for stage productions because I think it keeps your audience entertained. XD

They could be anyone. Ghosts, prisoners, Londoners, it's open to interpretation. I saw a production recently where the director had a see-through drop downstage at the beginning that made you see the ensemble's silouhettes as they pretended to be the inner workings of a clock, done to the sound effect of grinding cogs. Very, very good.

You saw the revival tour. ;) The revival had a slightly different concept then the original Broadway production.

Before you say you don't agree with the premise of the play, you should do your research. Sweeney Todd was a real serial killer from Fleet Street who was hanged in 1801 because of his crimes. The play, movie, books, etc. have all been based on that person!!! The writers were "compelled" to set it in Britain because that is where it happened!!!

I don't know if it's just me, but the person they use for Sweeny Todd just doesn't seem right. He looks too evil. Sweeny was supposed to be a like-able character who you could sympathize, one who wasn't evil, just angry. REALLY angry. That's just my perspective though.

I have to agree ... ( 1 hour ago by Tejinojin)
I have to agree with you that george hearn's performance was a bit over the top in my opinion. Sweeney todd is the ultimate tragic hero. I feel however that the character should be angry, after all he was wrongfully imprisoned 15 years, his wife was brutally raped, and then was tricked into believing she was dead, and then went on a killing spree, ending up killing his wife who was alive in the end. This is supposed to be his spirit at the end of the show, hence the furnace. That's just my idea.
