You can try knitting a swatch using the stitch you plan to use on the blanket. Measure how many stitches across and rows fit in an inch. (example: 5 stitches and 7 rows=1 inch) Then you can multiply that times the size you need and you'll know how many to cast on.

Can you recommend a website that shows the terms, symbols and abbreviations associated with knitting? When it says Purl
(k8, k2tog)*, does that mean to knit 8 and then do an increase in the same stitch? Where can I learn the difference between knit and purl? Is that how you wrap the yarn around your hook?

I know how to knit. It sounds like the gap is caused by missing stitches. I also went through the problem of the needles cant even move. It may be caused by being distracted, and you forget where you are in the stitch. Or, you just have to loosen up in your stitches.

go to the cyberseam website it teaches u everything about knitting: purl stitch, slip stich, how to increase and decrease and everything else u need to know about knitting like what the codes are and stuff.
