Becomming a manic depressive, which is what happened to Peter, is NOT finding spirituality it is most definitely being overcome with darkness. As a sufferer of depression myself I know whereof I speak. Peter was ill for a long long time. There were several early attempts at comebacks that never stood a chance. At one stage the poor man was living rough on the streets. Peter went through a dark time but through the love of friends found his health again. A great man who truly suffered for his art

Carlos Santana obviously heard this and "Black Magic Woman" and was inspired. It's like Santana before Santana. This was recorded in late '66 and released early '67.

This was recorded using the 1959 sunburst Les Paul Standard that Green later sold to Gary Moore. In an interview, Peter Green mentioned that that particular Les Paul seemed to sustain easily, & he just stood close to the amplifier for those sustained notes in this tune.

Peter "gave" that guitar to Gary Moore for $50. I saw it at a Dallas guitar show and it's insured for 10 million bucks.

Peter Green wasn't bipolar. He was mentally ill, but not bipolar (manic-depessive).More like schizophrenia, triggered by some bad acid.

I'll neva forget hearing this song on a rainy day driving down a lonely road, damn Peter Green is an amazing guitarist. I remember reading somewhere he took 'cid and saw God. He then sold all of his belongings, pretty wyld.

Erm... Peter Green WROTE Black Magic Woman. He also wrote a similar song 'I Loved Another Woman' from their self-titled debut. He was a big fan of blues in Dm, it seems.

Yep. I know Peter Green wrote it. It doesn't seem to be mentioned too often that Carlos Santana was indeed influenced by Green.
By both Green's guitar playing and Green's songs. What I meant to say was it's Peter Green with that particular guitar sound before Santana came on the scene. Hence it's like Santana before Santana. Just an expression. Didn't mean for the comment to be misunderstood.

Very true, Green's influence is often overlooked. Santana and his band often played with Mac in the USA before Peter left. My apologies if I seemed a little rude!

Seems he tried to harm his manager with a fire axe at a New York City hotel during a tour. He was institutionalized eventually, and went through a number of ECT (electroshock therapy) treatments, which may have harmed him in some ways. Do listen to his versions (I have 4 different) of "Jumping at Shadows" to experience some anguished blues. Search here at YouTube, and hang on....
