Here is what I found on the meaning...When it was released, there was speculation that the lyrics were drug-related; but the same thing was said about many songs in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the rumor has been largely dismissed. Lamm himself says that the title is "just a reference to the time of day," and that "the song is about writing a song. It's not mystical." The time of day in reference is 3:35 AM (or 3:34 AM), which would then be 25 (or 26) minutes to 4 AM.

Dufuses - "25 or 6 to 4" - it's a TIME on the clock (trains???? funny!!!) 25 or 26 minutes before 4 a.m. - hence - "waiting for the break of day." And it's about shooting heroin, not about cocaine. You can't try to sleep when you are doing coke!!! And you can't shut up on coke, don't think you'd be "looking for something to say."

I had always heard it was about LSD, some type of chemical ratio involved. I never heard anyone describe what time it was by phrasing it like "25 or 6 to 4". You just say 25 to 4, or 3:35.
