Actually if someone ran at us with their hands out for real we'd just punch them in the face. On the other hand if someone tried slamming us into a wall.......you get the idea. Then again, you probably don't.

Well.. this video shows a good side to aikido. This would work.
Ofcourse, the problem with Aikido is that most people would like to attack with it (me too), however Aikido in it's essence assumes you would avoid conflict - run away or talk your way out of it, thus to get you one should run after you and make flashy movements.

Oh, I hear what you're saying. I'm just fully aware that you have no idea how fucking wrong you are.
There's a reason almost everyone in the martial arts community looks down on your art as a bunch of useless New Age bullshit.
Sorry, buddy!

Except that having used it for real against Ju-jitsuka, Judoka and people out on the street I know far more about how good Aikido is than any number of people that know fuck all about Aikido.
If I post a vid on here of a tai chi guy getting beaten up and lable it "Aikido street fight" most people who think they know something about Aikido wouldn't be able to tell that it isn't Aikido.
You're the kind of people that blindly accept what you're told.

Aikido footwork and ... ( 4 days ago by shihonage)
Aikido footwork and movement in general is martially sound, and it mirrors strategy of most reality self-defense systems. The problem is that it has been stripped of a lot of explanation and strike training. Those who do their homework on basic strikes will see how everything in Aikido starts to connect to that framework. Suddenly, a dodged strike becomes a hold, and you realize that there's a reason why you bring opponent's head to your knee.

This is one of the better Aikido demos I've seen. Reflexes, fluidity, and speed, against an opponent who is not purposefully throwing himself off balance.
He's using his whole body tp create the momentum.

Ketsan, I practiced ... ( 2 days ago by Neologian)
Ketsan, I practiced Aikido for over 13 years under USAF, AAA, and an independant dojo. Along the way I attended numerous seminars conducted by ASU,Iwama,& Aikikai instructors. And while no two dojo's practice exactly the same, there is a great degree of commonality between them with respect to the contrived nature of the waza and ukemi. Please don't mistake me, I love Aikido for what it is and think it is a beautiful and difficult art. But the way it it practiced in MOST dojos is contrived.
Proof of this can ... ( 2 days ago by Neologian)
Proof of this can be seen in the demo video itself. Between each attack, before the moment nage applies the waza, uke can be seen waiting passively for the designated waza to be applied. In all but one or two there is a "beat" in which uke simple waits passively. Uke's attack consists of a narrowly prescribed attack after which he awaits the waza until he can perform the prescribed ukemi. This is not easily recognized by the untrained eye but it's there nevertheless.

People still care about waza? Some of us are more into learning Aikido.
Of course...I get ... ( 1 day ago by Neologian)
Of course...I get that. But Aikido's distinctiveness is, at least in part, due to its waza. You mistake me if you take me for someone who dismisses Aikido as worthless. I'm merely asserting that the "way" it is practiced in all to many dojos is very contrived and choreographed so as to give the practioner a false illusion of efficacy. To me Aikido is more akin to Kendo or Kyudo as martial arts - and less like MMA or other modern fighting arts.

I myself am a long time aikidoka, but it is true, that the way we practise the art is very inefficient to a real world setting, but this is also due to the fact aikido is more of a way of life then a way to fight somebody =3

nicely said =3, much more explanatory then my "way of life" thing XD
