Like I mentioned ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
Like I mentioned earlier... he's just copy pasting out of one or two documents... I suspect that he doesn't even know english well enough to put together his own sentences.
"but at least give ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"but at least give it a go even if it only raises conciousness"
Unfortunately it has been given a go, several times. The religious lawyers usually manage to weasel out of it by suggesting that expressing a general belief in God is not state sponsorship of any particular religion and so it doesn't violate the establishment clause...
I know, but its ... ( 1 day ago by markgg1)
I know, but its about raising the issue - this will than mkae people question these things... and than the atheist lawyers can get in there and have a go!
"so you want to ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"so you want to trade your blue laws for atheist laws that do the same to religious people..."
No, we want NO laws regarding religion. Neither for or against the practice or belief of any one religion. It is only what is written in our founding documents, we just want that promise honored.
But thank you for the vivid demonstration of the blind paranoia and ignorance we face when dealing with the American public.
"and than the ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"and than the atheist lawyers can get in there and have a go!"
That is what I am saying. The lawyers for the atheist cause did have a go. That was the result. A slippery argument that got us nowhere... It is also a problem because when it did hit the news it was regarded by many Americans as being nit-picky and 'unAmerican' to try and take the issue to the courts in the first place. Not many people want to touch it these days because the case is so easily misrepresented in the press.
but what your not ... ( 1 day ago by BigG99)
but what your not getting is that there are certain laws that if taken away, would threaten or impinge on religious freedom...like stopping Obama from allowing a pastor to pray at his inaguration.. thats his right as a religious person to have him come do that... Or forcing Pators to marry or agree with homosexual lifestyles even though its clearly taught against in the bible. there is no such thing as religious or non religious freedom. Just the world we live in.
hmmm, im not so ... ( 1 day ago by markgg1)
hmmm, im not so sure - because i think its in the US constitution to have religious freedom. What im not comfie is, is that the US institutions are so involved with church and god... when USA is founded on secular values. Its fine for people to be religious in USa obviously, but it shouldnt be intertwined with the political system - they should be distinctly seperate
but as I say again, ... ( 1 day ago by markgg1)
but as I say again, it is not about winning necdesarily - just getting the issue out there in the open... so it will make poeple think about it, and also allows those quiet non-believers to become more involved... like starting atheistic movements, or humanits movements (like in Uk, which is growing)
just today 800 london buses are to be pasted with a slogan saying 'God probably doesn't exist, so stop worrying and enjoy your life'
I cant wait to see one!
you see my problem ... ( 1 day ago by BigG99)
you see my problem is that i dont even think that this is possible...you see for a person who is religious, it guides their daily decisions, policies, ethics and values.. it would seem that most of your great leaders in the states are all religious. How then can they sepreate their faith from their daily work and life.... impossible. when you start getting more non religious leaders, then you might see some changes.
i think that if ... ( 1 day ago by markgg1)
i think that if religion guides a persona ethics or moralitys in politics, I think that is fine. For example tony blair used to say he gets a lot of his political beleifs from his religion. But this is different to start preaching religion, and usin ghte word of god to guide policy. For example, Bush said that 'god wants everyone to be free' and that helped him decide to go to war. I think there is a difference
Also, to be elected in USA meand u must be religious, so i am certain many r not
what i mean by that ... ( 1 day ago by markgg1)
what i mean by that is many, are probably not going to be honest if they are non-believers
"would threaten or ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"would threaten or impinge on religious freedom...like stopping Obama from allowing a pastor to pray at his inaguration"
You clearly do not understand the nature of these laws or the bill of rights if you think this is the case. Someone choosing to pray in public has nothing to do with things like blue laws. If no such laws existed, a person's right to choose to pray in public would still be guaranteed under the first amendment. And no one is trying to force a pastor to do anything...
"just getting the ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"just getting the issue out there in the open..."
I understand what you are saying, but by the same token, you don't seem to understand. The way the issue has been spun in the past actually hurts any atheist causes. No one winds up thinking, it just turns into an irrelevant hostility over patriotism because of the way the US Christian propaganda works. There are humanist movements in the works, but the fight over the pledge is a bad one right now.
"...many, are ... ( 1 day ago by nobagav)
"...many, are probably not going to be honest if they are non-believers"
The last numbers I heard were that there are at least 8 closeted atheists in the US Senate and as many as 30 in the House.

alexns,
I value freedom, which America was founded on. Apparently, you are more interested in theocracy. I suggest that it is you who should leave if you hate freedom so much. I hear that Iran has a theocracy already set up... why don't you move there?

BigG99,
If homosexual marriage is allowed, it doesn't force clergy to marry them. Clergy could still restrict who they marry. It's the Justice of the Peace, a PUBLIC office that would do such marriages.
For what it's worth, I don't think the government should marry anyone.

Did you not just see this video? Why would you make such an idiotic response to this? And y'all wonder why we go to your videos and insult you.
Do you have a list ... ( 1 hour ago by Preet2906)
Do you have a list of the points you made? Could you send them to me in a message? I'd like to respond to them, there are better points to be made about why an athiest cares about religion but 'rational thought' doesn't correspond with some of these. Thanks =]
